Tony Blair Abandons His Church 4 Days before Xmas
In June 2007 Tony Blair visited Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican. Six months later, in December, the former British PM was welcomed into the Catholic Church by the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal O'Connor (the head of British Catholics in England and Wales). BBC's David Willey said it had never been a secret that Mr Blair had been taking secret instructions from a Catholic priest. The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, who is the leader of the official Anglican church, wished his former church member good luck, and thanks Mr. Blair for his Xmas gift to the Anglican Church.
Mr. Blair is not the first British official who abandons the State Church of Mother England. For example, an ex-Tory minister Ann Widdecombe is also a Catholic convert (she became a Catholic in 1993). Blair's wife and children are already Catholic. Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, who led the service to welcome Mr Blair, said he was "very glad" to do so. Mr Blair was received into full communion with the Catholic Church during Mass at Archbishop's House, Westminster, on Friday, 21 Dec., 2007. Federico Lombardi, Vatican Chief spokesman, praised Blair's choice to convert, and admitted he was "aroused with joy and respect".
Blair's conversion comes at an embarrassing moment for the Anglican Church, as a recent research by Christian Research clearly demonstrates Catholic churchgoers in the UK now outnumber Anglicans for the first time since the Reformation. The numbers have allegedly swelled due to the great influx of "EU nationals from Eastern Europe" who have immigrated to the UK recently, says the research. Those mysterious Eastern European Catholics are non other than Polish and Lithuanian Catholics that moving to the UK (and Ireland/Eire) en masse looking for a lucrative employment as plumbers, carpenters, home attendants, and cleaners.
